COVID-19 Mobile Application

Objectives of the application

1. Notify people that they have been near an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.
2. Protect others, in the event of a positive COVID-19 test result, the application would anonymously notifies individuals met during the 14 previous days.

How it works

• The free mobile application would use Bluetooth technology to exchange a random ID with other smartphones nearby. This application would exclude any form of geolocation by GPS. There will be no exchange of personal information.
• In the event of a positive COVID-19 test result, a health professional would assign a unique code to this person, who would then decide whether to input the code in the mobile application.
• The recipients of the notification would not receive any information on the infected individual.
• The application would display tailor-made advice and promote prompt treatment through access, by way of an example, to a government service (telephone number).
• It would be possible to temporarily deactivate at any time the application or completely erase it.
• The application would not consider certain contexts such as protective masks or separation by a glass surface. 
• The notification application involves the assignment of a unique code. For reasons of effectiveness and interoperability between Canadian provinces, the Government of Canada is proposing to attribute the codes anonymously and to manage the notification of the people who had contact with an individual infected with COVID-19.
